Teacher Feature - January 2017

What is your educational background? I attended Flat Rock Elementary and North Surry High School. For college I went to Surry Community College, Appalachian State University, where I earned a BS in Interior Design, and then UNCG, where I received my BFA in Art Education.

Where do you teach? What grade level(s) and subject area(s)? I am a teacher at Mount Airy Middle School and I teach art to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

How many years have you been in education? I have been in education 25 years.

How many years have you worked in another career? I worked for four years in design. I loved drawing designs but did not like the high pressure of sales.

Tells us about your family. I have been married to my husband, Bill, for 31 years. We have three children: Andrew and his wife Jodi, Elizabeth and Daniel. We also have Bailey, our big, yellow, furry dog and Charlie, our shiny, black cat. Both of our animals came to our house looking for a home and have been with us ever since.

What is your favorite part of the year and why? I fell in love with fall while living in Boone. One of the reasons I was ready to leave the coast after living there for two years was because I love the cooler days and beautiful colors we see around here.

Finish this statement: I teach because... I love sharing my knowledge of art and motivating children to create their own art. I've always said I am a better teacher than artist. I am amazed at the things my students accomplish.

Ask your class or group of students to describe you using 3 adjectives. Inspiring, crafty and very patient
