Tharrington Primary Principal Named

Mount Airy City Schools is pleased to announce that Mrs. Emily Niston has been named the new principal of Tharrington Primary School (BHT). Niston returns to Mount Airy City Schools with 18 years of classroom and leadership experience. Her educational career began in 1999 when she accepted a first-grade position at BHT. In 2012, she left the district to accept an assistant principal position at Franklin Elementary School in Surry County.

Mrs. Niston has been named from a pool of highly-qualified individuals where her experiences in an elementary setting and ability to create and foster relationships while communicating effectively matched the feedback from the community and staff regarding the traits of the school’s next principal.

Mrs. Niston attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1999. While teaching at BHT, she worked through High Point University to earn her Masters Degree in Educational Leadership where she graduated in 2012.

Mrs. Niston stated, “I am humbled and honored to have this opportunity to join the team as principal at Tharrington Primary School. I look forward to serving this community of students and families and continuing the academic excellence that has been established at this school.”

Dr. Kim Morrison, Superintendent, noted, “Mrs. Emily Niston is not a stranger to Mount Airy City Schools. She excelled as a teacher and has gone on to excel as an administrator in a neighboring district. We are excited to bring Mrs. Niston home to BHT where she started her career and welcome the vision she has for taking BHT to the next level for all students.”

Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education and administration are pleased to welcome Mrs. Emily Niston as the new principal of Tharrington Primary School. She will be principal effective July 1, 2017. Students, families, and the community will be invited to a “Meet the Principal Night” that will take place this summer.
