Teacher Feature April 2018

What is your educational background?
Jones Elementary, Mount Airy Junior High School, Mount Airy High School, Associate of Arts from Surry Community College, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Winston Salem State University

Where do you teach? What grade level(s) and subject area(s)? I am the Biotechnology and Health Science Teacher at Mount Airy Middle School. I teach students in grades 6-8.

How many years have you been in education? This is my first year as a teacher but prior to this adventure I spent about a year and a half as a teacher's assistant in the exceptional children's program.

How many years have you worked in another career? I have been a registered nurse for seven years and worked in med/surg, cardiac, and Hospice. Prior to nursing school, I worked in the business side of healthcare for more than 15 years. In addition to teaching, I also work in the family radio business with my husband.

Tell us about your family. I have been married to Kelly Epperson for almost 16 years. We have a daughter, Abby, who is in 5th grade at Jones Intermediate School. I also have two stepchildren, Hal and Jill, who are both graduates of Mount Airy High School. We have 4 cats, Licorice, Suzie, Copper, and Rey. Since we are all Mount Airy graduates you will often find us in the stands at Mount Airy ballgames. We are also Wake Forest fans and attend as many games as we can. One of my favorite places is the beach and Abby and I try to go there as much as possible.

What is your favorite part of the year and why? My favorite part of the school year is the fall when everyone comes back. There is such excitement and students are ready to get started. It is fun meeting new students and seeing the wonder on their faces as they enter new classrooms.

Finish this statement: I love seeing the lightbulb turn on as a student learns something new. I also want to be a positive role model that they can turn to if they need something.

Ask your class or group of students to describe you using 3 adjectives. They said "caring", "nice", and "smart".
