Discretionary Admission (Out-of-District) Tuition

Mount Airy City Schools

Mount Airy City Schools allows students who reside outside the district to attend through Discretionary Admission, as approved by the Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education. Students admitted through this process are required to pay tuition as established by the Board.

Policy 4130 Discretionary Admission


Tuition arrangements must be completed before a Discretionary Admission student can be enrolled.


Tuition Requirements

All tuition requirements must be addressed before student enrollment. Discretionary Admission students must meet one of the following requirements before they can be enrolled:

  • Tuition is paid in full, or

  • An approved payment plan is established, or

  • A Tuition Hardship Waiver has been submitted and approved by the district's committee.

Students may not begin attending classes until tuition requirements are met.


Discretionary Admission Students

The Mount Airy City Schools Board of Education must approve all Discretionary Admission requests.

Requests for admission will be presented for approval at the next scheduled Board of Education meeting after the application has been received and reviewed.

Once approved by the Board:

  • Tuition must be paid in full, or a payment plan must be established before enrollment, unless a hardship waiver request has been submitted and approved.

  • Students may not begin attending classes until tuition requirements have been met.


Tuition Payment Plans

Families who are unable to pay tuition in full may request a payment plan.

Payment plans follow this schedule:

  • 50% of tuition is due in August

  • The remaining 50% is due in January


Payment plans must be established before the student is enrolled.


Hardship Waiver Requests

Families experiencing financial hardship may submit a Tuition Hardship Waiver Request Form for consideration.

Please note the following requirements:

  • The Tuition Hardship Waiver Form must be completed annually

  • The waiver must be approved by the district's committee

  • Virginia tuition waivers not accepted - Beginning 26-27 School Year

  • Late waiver requests will not be accepted

Deadlines to submit the hardship waiver form is two weeks before the first day of the new school year.

Prorated Tuition

Students who enroll after the school year has begun will have their tuition prorated based on the number of remaining instructional days in the school year.


Athletics Eligibility

Students participating in athletics must meet all tuition requirements. Failure to meet tuition requirements may result in ineligibility to participate in athletic programs until tuition obligations are satisfied.
