After-School Programming

Mount Airy City Schools does not currently offer any after-school programming or childcare services on our school campuses. We are committed to consistently looking for potential funding opportunities to provide families with daily after-school services. In addition, we work closely with community agencies to advocate for our students, identify potential resources, and build strong partnerships for all stakeholders.

Jones Intermediate School, Mount Airy Middle School, and Mount Airy High School offer a variety of athletics at middle and high school while also offering many academic-based teams such as LEGO Robotics, HOSA, and Quiz Bowl for students to engage in during limited after-school hours. While these programs provide enriching opportunities that extend learning beyond the school day, we understand they may not fully meet the daily childcare needs of some families. We are happy to connect you with community resources to help ensure that all students have a safe, supportive, and productive environment after school.

Update- June 4, 2025- Mount Airy City Schools was not selected for the 21st Century Grant referenced below. Should the grant become available again in 2026, we plan to reapply in hopes of securing this valuable support for our students and programs.

January 30, 2025:
Mount Airy City Schools aims to provide an innovative experience for the Bear Tracks Leadership Academy (BTLA) after-school programming for at-risk learners in Kindergarten through fifth grade. This will include academic and enrichment opportunities enhanced with community partnerships.

This programming depends on our ability to secure a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, a three-year federal grant that will be announced during the late spring or early summer of 2025. Please see the Public Notice below for additional details.

Public Notice

January 30, 2025

Mount Airy City Schools intends to apply for a 21st Century Community Learning Center Cohort 18 grant. Our district was privileged to have been awarded this grant in 2017 and, thanks to this impactful funding, operated our after-school Future Leaders Academy through 2021 and our summer enrichment experiences. We look forward to having the opportunity to apply for this potential 3-year funding again to provide our students with high-quality after-school and summer programming.

If funded, this grant will allow our district to provide after-school programming for BH Tharrington Primary and Jones Intermediate Schools. In addition, we would be able to provide Summer Enrichment Experiences (SEE) for rising 1st through 8th grade students.

If you have questions regarding this funding opportunity, please contact Penny Ballin at the Mount Airy City Schools Community Central Office, located at 351 Riverside Drive, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
